Principal Design Features
This is a high magnetic permeability alloy of nickel and iron.
Applications
Transformer core laminations and magnetic shielding.
Machinability
This is a high nickel alloy with resultant tendency to "gummy" machining. It behaves in similar manner to the austenitic (300 series) stainless steels. High-speed steel or carbide tools may be used with lard oil lubricant. If water-soluble cutting fluids are used it is important to clean the parts thoroughly immediately after machining to avoid corrosion contamination.
For high-speed steel tooling:
Turning is done at a speed of 50 surface ft./min. and feed of .001" to .002" per revolution.
Drilling is done at a speed of 35 surface ft./min. and feed of .001" to .004" per revolution.

Forming
Forming is readily accomplished with standard methods.
Welding
Conventional welding methods may be used.
Heat Treatment
This alloy is not hardenable by heat treatment. Annealing may be done in a dry hydrogen atmosphere at 2150 F for 4 hours, followed by furnace cooling to 1100 F, then a cooling rate of 500 F per hour from 1100 F to 700 F. Air cool after 700 F.
A strain relief anneal may be done at 1700 F for 1/2 hour in a dry hydrogen or inert gas atmosphere.
Cold Working
The alloy has good ductility and is readily cold formed. Strip in the cold rolled condition works best for blanking operations.
