Principal Design Features This is a higher carbon, higher strength, free cutting steel. It contains sulfur to promote ease of machining.

Applications Typically used for screw stock or other similar high speed, free machining operations.

Machinability Machinability is good at 70% that of the 100% machinable 1112 free machining steel.

Forming Formability by conventional methods is good, similar to that for 1040 steel.

Welding Although 1140 steel can be welded it is not advisable to do so. The sulfur content may cause gas porosity in a weld and thus harm the properties of the steel.

Heat Treatment It is advisable to normalize 1140 steel at 1650 F and slow cool before heat treating. Then heat treat at 1550 to 1650 F and water or oil quench. Follow with a tempering operation.

Forging No data. Generally it is not advisable to hot work the sulfur containing steels. Consult the alloy supplier.

Hot Working No data. Generally it is not advisable to hot work the sulfur containing steels. Consult the alloy supplier.

Cold Working As with all of the free machining steels this steel should not be cold headed or swaged because it may fracture or crumble. It may be cold worked by other conventional methods that do not impart impact stress.

Annealing Anneal at 1600 F and slow furnace cool. A stress relief anneal may be done at 1000 F.

Aging Not applicable.

Tempering Temper at 600 to 1300 F for results similar to 1040 plain carbon steel.

Hardening Hardens by cold work or by heat treatment.
