This alloy is a free machining, high carbon, heat treatable metal combining elevated hardness and moderate corrosion resistance.
|
|
Applications
|
|
Commonly employed in applications requiring high hardness values, non-galling and non-seizing properties in a free machining steel. Due to its inherent porosity, it should not be considered for applications involving gas or liquid under pressure.
|
|
Machinability
|
|
Due to its' high sulfur content, this alloy can be readily machined using all common methods. Sulfur causes easy chip breakage and acts as a lubricant during machining.
|
|
Welding
|
|
Not recommended for welding .
|
|
Hot Working
|
|
Similar in characteristics to high speed tool steel. Heat to 1400-1500 F(760-816 C), then on to 1900-2100 F(1038-1149 C) slowly. Finish at 1700 F(927 C), furnace cool and anneal fully after reaching room temperature for maximum properties.

Cold Working
|
|
Not generally used in forming operations, this alloy can withstand moderate deformation in the fully annealed condition.
|
|
Annealing
|
|
Soak at 1550-1600 F(843-871 C), furnace cool.
|
|
Tempering
|
|
For maximum hardness, soak 1 hour at 300-350 F(149-177 C). This will yield Rc 56 minimum.
|
|
Hardening
|
|
Soak at 1850-1950 F(1010-1066 C), air cool or warm oil quench.
