Principal Design Features A 285 covers pressure vessel plate of low and intermediate tensile strength carbon steel

Applications Used for non-critical pressure vessel applications of low to intermediate strength requirements.

Machinability Machinability is good much the same as for AISI 1020 or 1030 low carbon steel.

Forming Forming may be done by conventional methods without difficulty.

Welding The alloy involved may be welded by conventional methods. The plate products covered by this specification are intended to be fusion welded.

Heat Treatment Plates ordered to this specification are normally in the as-rolled condition. They may be ordered from the supplier as normalized or stress relieved if so desired. The alloy is not heat treated for hardening.

Forging The product form is plate and it is not subject to forging.

Hot Working No data. The alloy specified could be hot worked if necessary. Consult the alloy supplier.

Cold Working Readily cold worked by conventional methods.

Annealing Annealing, if required due to cold forming, can be done at 1600 F followed by slow cooling.

Aging Not applicable.

Tempering Not applicable.

Hardening Hardens due to cold working. This specification does not cover heat treat and quenched steel for hardening.

Other Comments The steel covered by this specification is a nominal 60 ksi tensile strength plate product. it is similar to plain carbon 1030 steel in physical and mechanical properties.
