Principal Design Features
A515 covers carbon steel plate for use in pressure vessels at ambient and higher temperature service. The alloy involved for the specification is basically similar to AISI 1330 steel.
Applications
Used for high strength plate that is fabricated into pressure vessels for intermediate and higher temperature service such as boilers.
Machinability
Machinability is good, similar to that of the plain carbon steels.
Forming
The alloy is readily formed by conventional methods.
Corrosion Resistance
This is essentially a plain carbon steel and is not corrosion resistant. It will rust unless protected.
Welding
This specification cover plate steel that is intended to be fabricated by welding. Thus it is readily weldable by standard methods.
Heat Treatment
Plate material to this specification is supplied in the "as rolled" or normalized or stress relieved condition. Further heat treatment is not covered by this specification.
Forging
Material is supplied as plate and not subjected to later forging.
Hot Working
If need be this plate material could be hot worked. Consult the alloy supplier for temperature and treatment information.
Cold Working
Plate material may be readily bent or cold formed as is typical of plain carbon steels.
Annealing
Annealing is not covered by this specification. However the steel involved can be annealed at 1600 f and slow cooled.
Tempering
Not applicable.
Hardening
This specification does not cover hardening by heat treatment and quenching, although the steel is capable of such.
Other Comments
The Grade 70 material must meet a minimum of 70 ksi tensile strength with 21% minimum elongation. The physical and mechanical properties of this steel are similar to those of AISI 1330 steel.
