Principal Design Features This alloy is a general purpose, high speed, molybdenum type tool steel.

Applications M10 is employed in tooling applications requiring excellent wear and cutting capabilities including punches, cutters, taps, drills, broaches, planer tools, etc.

Machinability The machinability rating of M10 is roughly 30% of 1018 carbon steel.

Forming Not applicable.

Heat Treatment See hardening, annealing and tempering.

Forging Preheat slowly to 1550 F, then heat directly to 2000 F. Do not forge below 1800 F. Forgings must be slowly cooled in lime.

Annealing Material should be packed in cast iron chips/ borings prior to annealing. Heat to 1600 F and cool slowly to 1200 F at roughly 30 F per hour.

Tempering For maximum wear resistance double and triple tempering offer the best results. Immediately following quenching, temper in the area of 1100 F.

Hardening Heat treat M10 in salt baths or controlled atmosphere furnace. Preheat to 1500 F and soak, then heat directly through 2200 F. Oil quench.
