Principal Design Features This alloy is one of the Shock Resisting tool steel types. It retains reasonable ductility even in the hardened condition which enables it to perform in applications where shock impact is imparted to the alloy.

Applications Used for chisels, hammers and similar repetitive, hard impact, applications.

Machinability The alloy is readily machinable by standard means. It has a machinability rating of 85% that of the W group water hardening low alloy tool steels.

Forming In the annealed state the alloy is readily formed by conventional methods.

Welding The alloy may be welded by standard methods. Contact the alloy supplier for appropriate procedures.

Heat Treatment Preheat slowly to 1200 f and then gradually raise temperature to 1600 F. Hold at temperature for 10 to 20 minutes and then water or brine quench.

Forging Forge at 2000 F down to 1650 F. Do not forge below 1600 F.

Hot Working See "Forging".

Cold Working The alloy may be readily cold worked in the annealed condition.

Annealing Anneal at 1450 F and slow cool in the furnace at a rate not exceeding 40 F per hour.

Aging Not applicable to this alloy.

Tempering Temper at 350 - 800 F for Rockwell C hardness of 60 to 50.

Hardening See "Heat Treatment" and "Tempering".

Other Comments S2 has moderate wear resistance with good strength and impact resistance.
