Availability

Titanium CP Grade 4 is stocked by 20 North American distributors and produced by 26 large mills. Distributors will offer small quantity buys while mills will generally only sell large quantities, with delivery times anywhere from 10 to 50 weeks depending on size and form required

This material is stocked primarily in Flat Rolled Products by 15 distributors but is also available to a lesser extent in Bar Products, Forging Products, Wire Products, Tubular Products, Shapes, and Casting Products.

Principal Design Features Grade 4 displays the highest strength of all the unalloyed grades. It combines excellent corrosion resistance with good formability and weldability. While mill availability is not a problem, distributor availability is limited and should be a consideration in alloy selection. Beta Transus (F +/- 25) 1740.

Applications Generally chosen for its corrosion resistance in a variety of chemical process equipment as well as marine and airframe applications.

Machinability As a family, titanium and its alloys have developed a mystique as a nightmare to machine. This is simply not the case. Experienced operators have compared its characteristics to those found in 316 stainless steel. Recommended practice includes high coolant flow(to offset the material's low thermal conductivity), slow speeds and relatively high feed rates. Tooling should be tungsten carbide designations C1-C4 or cobalt type high speed tools.

Forming May be hot or cold formed using hydropress, power brake, stretch or drop hammer methods. Similar in characteristics to 300 series stainless steels.

Welding Rated as "good" in terms of weldability.

Heat Treatment Not hardenable by heat treatment.

Forging Roughing operations can begin at 935 C (1715 F),while finishing should be performed at 843 C(1550 F).

Hot Working Hot forming will reduce both the springback and required forming forces, and will increase the overall ductility of the material.

Cold Working The cold work characteristics of this material is similar to that of a moderately tempered austenitic stainless steel. In multiple cold forming operations, intermediate stress relief is recommended to prevent tearing or other material damage. Post-work annealing is required to reattain optimum performance characteristics.

Annealing Heat to 704 C (1300 F),hold for 2 hours follow by air cooling. For intermediate stress relieving, heat to 482-538 C(900-1000 F) and hold for 45 minutes.
